FLINT, Michigan — After spending much of his life reading defenses on the hardwood, former basketball standout Kellen Brandon has shifted his focus to a different kind of reading.

The former Flint high school basketball star now owns a publishing company, and he’s looking to bring other authors and readers, young and old, along with him.”Black people get concerned with the word ‘local,'” Brandon said. “I’m a local author, but that’s fine, because I have a community that supports me.”Brandon, 30, always enjoyed writing stories and journal entries as a child, but said he was encouraged to focus on another natural talent — basketball.

His play at Flint Southwestern Academy earned him a full hoops scholarship to Tennessee State University, but his career was cut short when he suffered a torn Achilles.

Mr. Kellen finished his Bachelors in Criminal Justice At Tennessee State University. You can find out more about his company called Be Impacted.
