Olympian says activity key to fighting obesity

‘We need to bring back imagination’

Barbara Jones Slater didn’t grow up playing video games and watching television. She grew up playing kick the can, stick ball and double dutch jump rope.

In 1952, at the age of 15, she became the youngest woman to win a gold medal in track and field in the Olympics — a record she still holds. Slater was a member of the world record-setting 4 x 100-meter relay team in Helsinki, Finland. She struck gold in the same event at the Pan American Games in 1955 and at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
