Funeral home once focal point for black community

Foston’s maintains legacy of service to families in Clarksville

Meriwether, 65, began working at the funeral home in 1964 when he was a junior at Burt High School. He graduated from Tennessee State University, and several years later, he returned home to assist Gachette because of her illness.

He purchased the business in 1991 after her death.

Meriwether has continued the important work of community service, sometimes working with families who didn’t have insurance or money for a funeral.
