Amanda Ray received a special visit Sunday afternoon from members of the doctoral program at Tennessee State University.

Ray, a teacher from Mt. Juliet, has battled cancer since December 2013. She was working on her doctorate when she received the diagnosis, and according to her husband, Nelson Ray, almost gave up on the dream when she became too weak to drive herself to classes.

On Sunday, the dream became a reality as faculty from TSU visited Amanda Ray in her hospital room and performed the hooding ceremony.
